Tips On Bedroom Fengshui

The position of your bed may affects the quality of your sleep and in turn affects other aspects of your life. As bed is rather mobile and easily shifted, it also turns out to be one of the practical Feng Shui cures to remedy the negative energy clouding us. Here are some general guidelines when it comes to placement of your bed.

1) Your bed room should preferably be located at your personal favourable sectors of house according to your life kua number. Please click here if you are not sure of your personal life kua number

2) Your bed should be at the favourable sector within the bedroom

3) Layout of your bedroom should preferably be square or rectangular, avoid missing corners as energy circulation is not optimal.

4) Bedroom door should not face a staircase or opposite pointed edges like the corner of a wall. These are known as poison arrows.

5) Your bedroom, especially master room should not be situated behind the wall where a statue of worship is positioned.

6) The bedroom should not have mirror reflecting the bed. If this can't be helped, cover the mirror with a cloth. I used to do this quite often when I stayed in hotel rooms where the mirrors were directly facing the bed.

7) Avoid putting fish tanks, plants, Buddha statues, stones or human figurines in the bed room.

8) Avoid 3 or more chairs in a couple's bedroom unless you would like to invite third party.

9) The bed head should be positioned to face your favourable directions (again based on your life kua number) especially the "Relationship - 延年" direction. This is the direction where the tip of your head faces when you lie down on the bed.

10) The bed head is preferably against a wall but not sharing the same wall as the toilet or bedroom door.

11) There should not be windows above the bed head which might results in headaches. Cover it with thick curtains if you cannot avoid that.

12) There should not be ceiling fan, hanging lights directly above the bed. It is also important to remember not to sleep under a beam which forms a pressure on the body. Whichever part of the body being "pressed down" by the beam, that part of the body is likely to have some disorders. So far, we have seen a number of such cases.

13) Your bed should be slightly raised with space at the bottom to promote good circulation of air in the room. Avoid clustering the bottom of your bed and keep the space spick and span.

14) There should not be telephone/mobile phone, radios or other electrical appliances on your bed head. They will affect the quality of your sleep.

15) The bed should not be position diagonally or in the centre of the room without solid support at the bed head.

16) You should select an auspicious day to position the bed. Once it is done, do not move the bed unnecessarily, especially for pregnant women.

17) Bedroom is a place for rest. Avoid playing loud music or engage noisy activities such as playing mahjong in the bedroom.

18) For couple's bedroom, do not hang your wedding photographs on the wall opposite your bed. Some couples told me they could reminisce on their love when they lie down on bed if they hang their photographs in this way (visible to them as opposed to hanging above the bed head). In actual fact, the couples are kicking themselves on their faces when they did that. They woke up with bruises, not physical ones but those in their marriages.

This list is by no means exhaustive, and you probably find many other tips if you google around. However, I think the tips here are good starting points if you want to improve interpersonal relationships with your loved ones as well as having restful sleeps.

Choosing A Suitable Floor Level

I remembered when I was looking for a house, some of the factors that I considered were the view (without blockage), whether it was lift landing level, and the resale value (the higher levels usually fetch greater resale values). The other aspect I looked out for was whether the level is favourable to me. There are many ways to do this, but let me just share a simple way to find out your favourable floor levels.

Theory behind: Based on the River Map (or He Tu) and your Life Kua Number. Pls click here if you do not know how what is your Life Kua Number.

Which Feng Shui Theory To Use?

Two days ago, I met a very experienced Geomancer and we were chatting casually on methods we adopt when we do feng shui audit. He asked me, which were the techniques that I know of and have applied, and how accurate were they? I said I know a few, Eight House Theory, Flying Star, IChing Feng Shui, but seldom all the theories I used gave the same answers. He then asked me so which theories were superior?

While I was pondering for a politically correct answer so as not to offend him in relation to his speciality, he quickly continued with his view. He commented that all theories have their strengths and weaknesses and we would have observed that a certain method works for us for a particular period of time but somehow it lose its accuracy after that period (the period maybe a season, a month, a year or longer) and it is different from everyone. His advice was to learn different methods so that we could compare which is the most appropriate method that suit a particular property and stick to the method for that audit..sounds like a good advice, isn't it?

How the five elements came about?

If you google around for "Five elements", you probably find many hits that tell you something like this...

1) 5 Elements : Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, Wood = 5 elements
2) Cycle of Birth: Fire burns to Ashes (Earth), Earth produces Metallic materials (Metal), Metal melts to liquid (Water), Water nourishes trees (Wood)
3) Cycle of Destruction: Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melt Metal, Metal cuts Wood, Wood penetrates Earth, Earth stops Water

But where did the 5 Elements came about? Which came first? I believe many people have not thought of that question. The clue is in the Chinese He Tu (River Map). You could certainly google that to read more. According to the He Tu, the order of origination started from Water, then Fire, then Wood, followed by Metal and lastly Earth. It was said that when the Yin & Yang forces first joined, the resultant force was damp, thus Water is the first element that existed on Planet Earth. To balance the dampness, Fire was the next element that was formed. At this point, Planet Earth was still barren without any lives. With the combination of Fire and Water, the temperature was regulated to a state that promoted warmth and conditions to sustain life, thus Wood was next to appear. Again, to balance the warmness of Wood element, the cold energy of Metal emerged. We can see that the four elements were opposing each other (Fire & Water, Wood & Metal) and thus force of Earth was surfaced to regulate these 4 elements.

But briefly, it depicts that the 5 elements are not really the physical Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. They are really the characteristics of 5 universal types of forces that resemble the physical 5 elements, hence we use these physical elements to represent the universal forces.

Force Of Water : - Characterised by energy that is damp and moving in downward direction

Force of Fire : - Characterised by energy that is hot and moving in upward direction

Force of Wood : - Characterised by energy that is warm and moving in outward directions

Force of Metal : - Characterised by energy that is cool and moving in inward directiona

Force of Earth : - Characterised by energy that is of moderate temperature and moving in horizontal direction

Hope we have a clearer pictures on the origination of the five elements ;-)

Introducing IChing - 易经

IChing, sounds technical? Please do not read on if you are yawning. If you decided to skip the entire section, all you need to know is, everything in this universe follows a pattern. Master the pattern, and you will be able to predict the future.

Literally translated, it is the Old Book of Changes. But, what so great about this book of changes, you may ask?

Since ancient time, mankind has been living in close vicinity to Mother Nature, of which their survival is influenced by environmental factors. May it changes in climatic condition, land fertility, natural phenomena, tectonic plate movement, mankind constantly faces challenges to overcome the forces of nature to keep afloat. Our forefathers had accumulated centuries of wisdom living in tandem with the change in these forces, painstakingly inscribed their experience and learning in literature for the good of future generations. It was said that forces of nature and their effects on us could be traced to specific patterns. The origins, causes and consequences are well-documented in the Book Of Changes.

The fundamentals of Iching revolve around the concept of Yin and Yang as well as the five elements (Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, Fire). To give you an idea what is Yin and Yang

Woman is Yin, Man is Yang
Passive is Yin, Active is Yang
Night is Yin, Day is Yang
Sad is Yin, Happy is Yang
Quiet is Yin, Noisy is Yang
Still is Yin, Movement is Yang
Down is Yin, Up is Yang

The list goes on.......

The theory depicts that nothings is completely Yin or Yang, that is these 2 forces coexist, and the balance of these opposing yet complementary forces keep the world going. This theory applies to the physical and metaphysical aspects of life, virtually anything you could ever imagine. What do I mean by that? Take the example of Woman is Yin and Man is Yang. Now, woman may be dominantly Yin, but she may exhibit the Yang (masculine) characteristic, for example being physically strong, being very decisive or aggressive. Similarly, man could also display Yin (feminine) traits such as been passive or emotional.

Now, all forces in the universe present the Yin or Yang characteristics of the five elements. Forces at work influence our wellbeings physically, emotionally and psychologically which in turn impact our judgements and decision-makings, hence affect the outcomes. It is important to note that everything co-exist in a dependent manner, and each decision we make affect others and vice versa. Have you ever asked this question, "I did all the right things, why is it I do not see any results?" Think again.

Ushering In A Wealthier Year

The Lunar New Year is the most important event in the Chinese calendar and most Chinese display auspicious items in their homes and offices to symbolise prosperity, good fortune and to invite Wealth luck. In Feng Shui, various schools apply different techniques to determine Wealth sector in a dwelling and some of these can be pretty technical.

Let me introduce a simple way to identify and activate the Wealth sector.

If your main door is in centre (with reference to the living hall looking in), the left furthest corner diagonal to the door is the Wealth corner.

If your main door is at the right, the Wealth corner is also at furthest left corner diagonal to the door.

Lastly, if your main door is at the left, the Wealth corner is at furthest right corner diagonal to the door.

After identifying your Wealth corner, place auspicious items preferably related to Wealth here. Some people display God of Wealth, Gold Ingots, Piggy Bank..etc. For me, I prefer to use a Wealth bowl as seen below.

Other than displaying auspicious items, remember the followings:

1) Keep the Wealth corner bright and clean to invite the auspicious qi.

2) Do not put heavy stuff here to weight down your finance.

3) Do not put water and flower here. Chinese believes that doing so will 见财化水 (eroding one's wealth) & 把钱花光 (squander your wealth)

4) Do not have "poison arrow" (sharp corner or pointed objects) pointing directly at the wealth corner which may silently 'hurt' your finance.

Do try to activate your Wealth and drop me a note if it works for you! :-)
