There are many topics in Chinese Metaphysics and I am sure no one can master all. This is a space that I dedicate to share my learning and experience on topics related to Feng Shui and Destiny. Please feel free to comment.

Clocks In Feng Shui

Sometime back, we were handling a case where the customer was experiencing marital problem. The husband was often not home until the wee hours and sometime even stayed away from home for days. When we vistited the house, we were greeted by a huge grandfather clock in the hall. In the same hall, we noticed that there was another nice round clock hanging on the wall and a table clock sitting on top of the television. When we approached the couple's bedroom, again we noticed that there were two wall clocks and few alarm clocks sitting around. I could'nt help but ask the lady owner why they have that many clocks around. She answered with curiosity "Why?" "Simple", I replied, "You have so many clocks, some working, others are showing other than the right time, so which one do you want your husband to follow?" "Confusing, isn't it", I asked.

In Chinese culture, the pronunciation of the word "clock" sounds like "the end" which signifies ending of one's life or death. It has become a taboo for the Chinese to present clock as gift to others for fear of being accused of cursing the recipients. It may not be well received if the clock is positioned directly opposite the main entrance, or occupants and visitors will see "death" when they enter the house.

To see it in the logical sense, clock indeed has a place in affecting the welbeing of occupants in a living space. The moving hands of a clock generates motion in a space. It is particularly useful to refresh and move energy in a place that is often quiet or not occupied. Some practitioners use clocks as Feng Shui enhancers to enhance the auspicious energy in living spaces. Some modern clocks also play nice musics or metallic sounds that can use to lift up energy and in some instance use as metal cures for the misfortune and sickness stars (5 Yellow and 2 Black). However, it is not advisable to have too many clocks in a house and the size of clocks must be proportional to the space.

Birth Chart of House

With the change of period (8) on 4th Feb 2005, we have noticed many attempts by Feng Shui enthusiasts world-wide to referesh the Qi or energy of their properties (that were constructed in previous periods) by altering the positions of their main entrances, or undertaking massive renovations.

Various schools and practitioners preach different approaches to change the period of a property. Even the way to determine the period of a property has been a hot debating topic. One group of Masters said that the period of construction is the period of the property. Their explanation is that the base Qi is formed when a property is developed and this configuration of Qi will determine the success and failure of the occupants till the property is demolished or reconstructed.

Others argued that the move-in period should be used to determine the period of the property. Their viewpoint is based on the concept of alliance of Heaven, Human, Earth Qi where the Qi of a property is influenced by the alliance of these three cosmic Qi. Let say if we procure a resale apartment, the Human Qi of the previous occupants may be dissipated when they vacate the property. The absence of Human Qi breaks the cosmic trinity of alliance which could be re-established when the new occupants bring in new Human Qi.

In practice, we will normally suggest plotting 2 birth charts of property, one based on the construction period and the other with the move-in period. Observe the symptoms experienced by the occupants to determine which chart is closer to their encounters.

Life Kua Numbers & Flying Stars

When you look at the title of this article, you may ask, what has Life Kua number got to do with Flying star? Hmm..let me share some perspectives on their relationship.

In the Eight Mansion theory, all of us on this planet are broadly classified into the East Group Life (Kua number 1,3,4,9) and West Group life (Kua number, 2,5,6,7,8). If you do not know your Life Kua number, please find out
here. On the other hand, there are nine different stars (1 to 9) in the Flying star theory, and each star shares the same elemental characteristic as the Life Kua number. Eg, Life Kua No 1 and Flying Star 1 White Star represent the element - Water. So what if they are similar? How can we apply them in our analysis?

Firstly, when we plot the the Flying Star chart (Birth chart) for a house/property, we can take note of the mountain and water stars of the centre palace. If a person Life Kua number is 1, and the mountain and water stars of the centre palace are 2 & 5 respectively, then this property may not be suitable for him. Why is that so? Life Kua number 1 is of Water element as mentioned above and Flying stars 2 & 5 are of Earth element. In the elemental destruction cycle, Earth conquers water, therefore making Water very weak. Moreover, the 2-5 Flying Star combination signifies misfortune, sickness and trouble, a Life Kua number 1 person will suffer worse if he was to live in the property.

In addition, we can apply this relationship to the main entrance as it is a crucial point for Feng Shui assessment. If Life Kua number (the element) of a person is being suppressed by the facing Flying star (the element), especially an untimely star, then the house may bring problems to that occupant. One exception as in our example of the Life Kua number 1 person if the main entrance's facing Flying star is 9 (Fire). This is considered auspicious as Water conquering Fire also represents the person is controlling the Wealth & Fame arriving at his main entrance.

Some practitioners go further to use the same approach to determine which rooms in the property is suitable for an individual using the Life Kua number and the room's door facing Flying star. One interesting observation is that using this approach, we may also predict what may happen to a person staying in that room. Eg, a person's Life Kua number is 1 staying in a room where the door's facing is Flying star 4. As 1-4 combination represents academical achievement, we may then predict that the person might do well in examination if he lives in that room.

Of course, we should take a person's favourable and unfavourable elements into consideration for more refined assessment.

Observations On Usage Of Mirrors

In many of our audits, we have noticed that modern interior designs have incorporated the usage of mirrors as a technique to visually create space. Indeed, mirrors can bring light into dark areas to improve the life force energy. However, if they are used in the wrong manner, they may create problems for the occupants.

First of all, avoid having too many mirrors in a space. When light bounces off from one mirror to another, it could confusion to the occupants and may lead to headaches and emotional instability. Secondly, we noticed that some clients have full length vanity mirrors near the main entrance so that they can adjust their attires and make-ups before leaving their homes. This may cause energy travelling into the property to be distorted by the mirror. We always joke with our clients that they will see the image of the door hitting their bodies in the mirror when they open their main doors. Ouch!

Another notable observation is that clients install mirror at the missing corner, or at the opposite side of the wealth sector to double the effect. I am not saying that this is wrong, but for those who understand the elementary representations of direction (North- Water, South - Fire, East -Wood and West-Metal) should know that opposite energy clashes with each other. Give this a thought, if the East sector is missing, installing a mirror here will reflect the West sector energy across. Without considering the flying stars theory or eight mansion theory, the West Metal is hacking the East Wood, destroying the East Wood energy which is already weak.

In a handful of our Feng Shui audit cases, we have seen some clients hang concave and convex mirrors on top of their main entrances. Most of them have done so because they heard that these mirrors can expel evil forces. We do not want to doubt these mirrors' spiritual capability but advised them do it with care. The mirrors may pushed away the evil forces but also the good energy at the same time. Moreover, if the mirror faces the neighbour's main entrance, I guess it will cause more conflict then harmony.

Excuse Me, Is My House Haunted???

Last month, I visited a friend who has recently shifted into his new private apartment. At his door-step, I took a compass reading of the facing direction of the main entrance. The compass bearing showed South-West. I thought to myself, "Oh, that's what geomancers call the Devil's Back Gate". I pressed the door bell and was greeted by his maid. As I enter, I quietly took another compass reading, South, this time. This seems to be an indication that the energy at the main door is not stable. Somehow a voice inside told me something is not right with this house. My friend told me that since he shifted in 3 months back, he has been experiencing headache for no apparent reason. As I frequent the area, I noticed that this private apartment has been vacant for a long time before it was opened for booking. Even after 2 years of sale, the occupancy is only slightly more than 60%.

Few days later, my friend was admitted to hospital and it was determined that there is blood clot in his brain. The medical specialist did all kinds of scans and tests but could not determine the cause. I invited a spiritual master to examine his house and he confirmed that my friend's condition was a result of the spiritual infestation in the house. The Master did the space clearing the night before my friend was sent into the operation theatre to drain the blood out of his skull. Thank God, the operation is a success and my friend is recovering well.

This is however not my first encounter with spiritual infestation. It serves as a reminder to myself and fellow practitioners of the occupational hazard that we faced in field audits. Unless you possess the psychic ability to detect spiritual activities, you better armed yourselves with the knowledge of tell-tale signs of these yin forces. Let me share with you my field experience and what I have learnt from various practitioners for your reference.

Luo Pan, or Chinese compass
The Luo Pan is a very delicated piece of device that picks up magnetic forces. It is commonly carried by geomancers to ascertain directions and energy influence of a property/land. If the needle of the Luopan or compass moves from left to right and vice versa or turns in circle even when you are stationary, please leave the property or area immediately. In my last seminar with a group of property agents, I have advised them to carry a pocket compass with them. The compass not only help them determine the facing direction of a property, it can act as a spirit detector.

Yin Surrounding
Observe the surrounding environment. Properties that are near to cemeteries, hospitals, funeral parlours and temples are generally more Yin and prone to spiritual infestations. Also houses that are dark or vacant too long are ideal spirits gathering grounds. In addition, take note if there are bamboo, banyan, peach or banana trees outside a property.

History Of Property
If violent death or suicide has taken place in a property, it is quite likely that the place will be roamed by the spirits of the deceased.

Feng Shui Formulae
Using the Flying star theory, if a place is cluttered with Yin stars (2,5,4,7,9), there is a good chance that it invites spiritual activities.

We have also encountered cases where individual experienced poor health and fluctuating luck even though his Four Pillar and house's flying star are showing otherwise. It may be the work of the spirits residing in his house.

IChing Divination
According to some famous practitioners, IChing divination can also provide indication that a house is infested by spirits. IChing divination involves the use of 3 coins (Heaven, Earth & Human) to derive 6 lines that forms a predictive hexagram. Based on the hexagram and the changing line, we could also determine that the presence of spirits.

I have to specially mention here that spirtual presence may be due to environmental factor or act of charms or black magic. So do take note the next time you step into an unfamilar ground!!!

Why Are There 2 Seventh Lunar Months in 2006?

Many people asked me why there are 2 seventh lunar months this year. In fact, we may have heard in past years that there were duplicated lunar months (may be any month). So how did the duplicated month come about?

In general, it takes Earth about 365.24 days to revolve around the Sun but the 12 cycles of new moons and full moons that form a lunar year takes about 354.37 days. Therefore, the solar & lunar calendars differ by approximately 11 days every year. If this is not compensated, the gap between solar and lunar calendars will widen with time. Therefore, our ancestors have brilliantly added one more month to the lunar calendar every 2 to 3 years.

If you are still with me, Iet me go on to explain how we know which is the duplicated month. The revolution of Earth around the Sun takes 1 year covering 360 degrees. For every 15 degrees, Earth will undergo a sub-seasonal change. Therefore, there are a total of 24 sub-seasons in a year (15 degrees x 24 = 360 degrees). For example, Qing Ming is one of the sub-seasons where Chinese will worship their ancestors. These 24 sub-seasons are further classified as 12 main sub-seasons and 12 mid sub-seasons. In normal circumstances, each solar calendar month will have one main sub-season and another mid sub-season.

Picture this, when the mid sub-season falls on the last day of a lunar month, the next lunar month will not have a mid sub-season. Why is that so? Remember most solar calendar months have 30 or 31 days whereas lunar months have 29 days. From one mid sub-season to another, it will takes 30 or 31 days.
Therefore, the lunar month that does not have a mid sub-season will duplicate the preceding lunar month. For this year, the 7th mid sub-season of the year falls on the last day of the first Seventh lunar month (23 Aug 2006). As the next mid sub-season (the 8th mid sub-season) will occur 31 days later, the lunar month following the actual Seventh lunar month will miss the mid sub-season. Hence it has to duplicates the first Seventh lunar month.

A friend asked me if he can buy a new car in the lunar seventh month, if not may miss the good price if wait till the 2 seventh months are over. My answer to him is that there is no Feng Shui principles that say we cannot acquire properties, move house or marry in the seventh month. Just that in the Chinese custom, the lunar seventh month is the time when we pay respect to the deceased and ancestors. Therefore, the older generation may deemed it as inappropriate to carry out celebrations for the livings during this period. If he really cannot wait, just choose an auspicious date to carry out his purchase.

Misplacement Of The 4 Celestial Animals???

One of the first theories we learnt in Feng Shui is the four Celestial Animals - Green Dragon, White Tiger, Red Phoenix and Black Turtle. In Chinese, it is common to hear people say "Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger, Front Red Phoenix and Back Black Turtle".

This theory is very powerful and it has proven to be effective over the last thousands of year as testified by many. Even in the Yin Fengshui, sometime we can see figurines or sculptures of Green Dragon and White Tiger on the left and right of tombstones.

During my course of field audits, I have made several observations which are relevant to this theory. Somehow I realised houses with the West side higher or more vibrant than the East side pose more problems that right side over-towering the left side. Left and right are relative to the facing of a property but East and West are directions that are fixed. I believe if we understand how the four celestial animals are named, we probably have a clue. Why Green Dragon and White Tiger, and not the other way round? Dragon resides in the East, and green is the colour that represents the Wood element in the East and therefore the term Green Dragon was coined. Similarly the Tiger holds its fort in the West represented by White colour for Metal element, and hence named as White Tiger.

Of course, some practitioners advocate the "Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger" theory, while others insist that "East Green Dragon, West White Tiger". So who is right? I think trust the one that works!!!

What Determine The Quality Of Life?

Do you like your life? Often than not, I heard people complaining about everything that happen in their lives. The wives are nagging, the bosses are not forgiving, the stock markets make them lose more money, even the car park attendants are not sparing them. Sounds familiar?

Ever wonder, what are the factors that influence the quality of your life?

In my initial learning of the metaphysics of Feng Shui, I was introduced the concept of the trinity of alliance, Heaven, Earth and Human. I remembered I asked the question how Heaven, Earth and Human factors affect our lives. I asked my teacher and have also consulted the classic writings. I shall summarised the learning points here which I think has alot of relevance if you intend to change your life.

Let's start from the beginning of life. When a baby is borned, the newborn draws the first breathe from this planet. This is an important beginning as the energy or Qi runs through the entire body of the child. His/her destiny can be diciphered from the date and hour of birth. This is known as Heaven luck or destiny which cannot be changed.

The moment a newborn arrived in this world, he/she starts to be influenced by the Earth Qi, from the place he/she lives in, to the place he/she is educated and later worked in. The Earth energy constantly affects his/her physical and mental wellbeings. Even after he/she leaves this world, the ground which he/she is buried also affect at least the next two generations. The ancient art and science of Feng Shui has been popularly known to enhance the Earth Qi to promote harmonious living.

Between Heaven and Earth resides Humans. Humans are emotional beings with wisdom and decision-making ability. Our maker may have laid our paths for us, we are able to decide whether to pursue the "predestinated" paths. In many cases, twins who are born in the same hour, received the same upbringing and education and even live in the same place, why are their fates turned out to be very different? It could be differences in the Heaven luck that is beyond our divinations. Another logical reason is our behaviours, thoughts, actions and speech that influence the environment and people around us which in turn affect our lives. What goes around, comes around. If we decide we want to be happy, then bring happiness to others would be our best bet.

If you understand nothing from the above, just remember,
1) Heaven luck - Cannot be changed
2) Earth Qi - Can be enhanced, by Feng Shui
3) Human factor - Can be changed, through actions, speech, thought

So can you change your life?..You decide!

Energy, all around us

Modernisation & industralisation have led to the depletion of harmony and balance with nature that was once known and avocated by the ancient cultures. The existence of energy in our environment is not a new millenium discovery but was one expressed by metaphysical practitioners for thousands years.

This led to the intense study of the influence of our environments to our physical, emotional and spiritual bodies. It is named differently in different cultures, Chinese called it Feng Shui & Indian better known it as Vaastu.

It really amuses me that people are arguing if Feng Shui or Vaastu are supersititions, as a matter of fact, energy affects us. whether we like it or not, the Moon still revolves around Earth and Earth around the Sun causing energy changes that affect our lives.

The key is learning to adapt with the energy drift so that we can live in that harmony which was once experienced by our forefathers.
