Learning the art of Harmony and Prosperity

There are many topics in Chinese Metaphysics and I am sure no one can master all. This is a space that I dedicate to share my learning and experience on topics related to Feng Shui and Destiny. Please feel free to comment.

Observations On Usage Of Mirrors

In many of our audits, we have noticed that modern interior designs have incorporated the usage of mirrors as a technique to visually create space. Indeed, mirrors can bring light into dark areas to improve the life force energy. However, if they are used in the wrong manner, they may create problems for the occupants.

First of all, avoid having too many mirrors in a space. When light bounces off from one mirror to another, it could confusion to the occupants and may lead to headaches and emotional instability. Secondly, we noticed that some clients have full length vanity mirrors near the main entrance so that they can adjust their attires and make-ups before leaving their homes. This may cause energy travelling into the property to be distorted by the mirror. We always joke with our clients that they will see the image of the door hitting their bodies in the mirror when they open their main doors. Ouch!

Another notable observation is that clients install mirror at the missing corner, or at the opposite side of the wealth sector to double the effect. I am not saying that this is wrong, but for those who understand the elementary representations of direction (North- Water, South - Fire, East -Wood and West-Metal) should know that opposite energy clashes with each other. Give this a thought, if the East sector is missing, installing a mirror here will reflect the West sector energy across. Without considering the flying stars theory or eight mansion theory, the West Metal is hacking the East Wood, destroying the East Wood energy which is already weak.

In a handful of our Feng Shui audit cases, we have seen some clients hang concave and convex mirrors on top of their main entrances. Most of them have done so because they heard that these mirrors can expel evil forces. We do not want to doubt these mirrors' spiritual capability but advised them do it with care. The mirrors may pushed away the evil forces but also the good energy at the same time. Moreover, if the mirror faces the neighbour's main entrance, I guess it will cause more conflict then harmony.

Excuse Me, Is My House Haunted???

Last month, I visited a friend who has recently shifted into his new private apartment. At his door-step, I took a compass reading of the facing direction of the main entrance. The compass bearing showed South-West. I thought to myself, "Oh, that's what geomancers call the Devil's Back Gate". I pressed the door bell and was greeted by his maid. As I enter, I quietly took another compass reading, South, this time. This seems to be an indication that the energy at the main door is not stable. Somehow a voice inside told me something is not right with this house. My friend told me that since he shifted in 3 months back, he has been experiencing headache for no apparent reason. As I frequent the area, I noticed that this private apartment has been vacant for a long time before it was opened for booking. Even after 2 years of sale, the occupancy is only slightly more than 60%.

Few days later, my friend was admitted to hospital and it was determined that there is blood clot in his brain. The medical specialist did all kinds of scans and tests but could not determine the cause. I invited a spiritual master to examine his house and he confirmed that my friend's condition was a result of the spiritual infestation in the house. The Master did the space clearing the night before my friend was sent into the operation theatre to drain the blood out of his skull. Thank God, the operation is a success and my friend is recovering well.

This is however not my first encounter with spiritual infestation. It serves as a reminder to myself and fellow practitioners of the occupational hazard that we faced in field audits. Unless you possess the psychic ability to detect spiritual activities, you better armed yourselves with the knowledge of tell-tale signs of these yin forces. Let me share with you my field experience and what I have learnt from various practitioners for your reference.

Luo Pan, or Chinese compass
The Luo Pan is a very delicated piece of device that picks up magnetic forces. It is commonly carried by geomancers to ascertain directions and energy influence of a property/land. If the needle of the Luopan or compass moves from left to right and vice versa or turns in circle even when you are stationary, please leave the property or area immediately. In my last seminar with a group of property agents, I have advised them to carry a pocket compass with them. The compass not only help them determine the facing direction of a property, it can act as a spirit detector.

Yin Surrounding
Observe the surrounding environment. Properties that are near to cemeteries, hospitals, funeral parlours and temples are generally more Yin and prone to spiritual infestations. Also houses that are dark or vacant too long are ideal spirits gathering grounds. In addition, take note if there are bamboo, banyan, peach or banana trees outside a property.

History Of Property
If violent death or suicide has taken place in a property, it is quite likely that the place will be roamed by the spirits of the deceased.

Feng Shui Formulae
Using the Flying star theory, if a place is cluttered with Yin stars (2,5,4,7,9), there is a good chance that it invites spiritual activities.

We have also encountered cases where individual experienced poor health and fluctuating luck even though his Four Pillar and house's flying star are showing otherwise. It may be the work of the spirits residing in his house.

IChing Divination
According to some famous practitioners, IChing divination can also provide indication that a house is infested by spirits. IChing divination involves the use of 3 coins (Heaven, Earth & Human) to derive 6 lines that forms a predictive hexagram. Based on the hexagram and the changing line, we could also determine that the presence of spirits.

I have to specially mention here that spirtual presence may be due to environmental factor or act of charms or black magic. So do take note the next time you step into an unfamilar ground!!!

Why Are There 2 Seventh Lunar Months in 2006?

Many people asked me why there are 2 seventh lunar months this year. In fact, we may have heard in past years that there were duplicated lunar months (may be any month). So how did the duplicated month come about?

In general, it takes Earth about 365.24 days to revolve around the Sun but the 12 cycles of new moons and full moons that form a lunar year takes about 354.37 days. Therefore, the solar & lunar calendars differ by approximately 11 days every year. If this is not compensated, the gap between solar and lunar calendars will widen with time. Therefore, our ancestors have brilliantly added one more month to the lunar calendar every 2 to 3 years.

If you are still with me, Iet me go on to explain how we know which is the duplicated month. The revolution of Earth around the Sun takes 1 year covering 360 degrees. For every 15 degrees, Earth will undergo a sub-seasonal change. Therefore, there are a total of 24 sub-seasons in a year (15 degrees x 24 = 360 degrees). For example, Qing Ming is one of the sub-seasons where Chinese will worship their ancestors. These 24 sub-seasons are further classified as 12 main sub-seasons and 12 mid sub-seasons. In normal circumstances, each solar calendar month will have one main sub-season and another mid sub-season.

Picture this, when the mid sub-season falls on the last day of a lunar month, the next lunar month will not have a mid sub-season. Why is that so? Remember most solar calendar months have 30 or 31 days whereas lunar months have 29 days. From one mid sub-season to another, it will takes 30 or 31 days.
Therefore, the lunar month that does not have a mid sub-season will duplicate the preceding lunar month. For this year, the 7th mid sub-season of the year falls on the last day of the first Seventh lunar month (23 Aug 2006). As the next mid sub-season (the 8th mid sub-season) will occur 31 days later, the lunar month following the actual Seventh lunar month will miss the mid sub-season. Hence it has to duplicates the first Seventh lunar month.

A friend asked me if he can buy a new car in the lunar seventh month, if not may miss the good price if wait till the 2 seventh months are over. My answer to him is that there is no Feng Shui principles that say we cannot acquire properties, move house or marry in the seventh month. Just that in the Chinese custom, the lunar seventh month is the time when we pay respect to the deceased and ancestors. Therefore, the older generation may deemed it as inappropriate to carry out celebrations for the livings during this period. If he really cannot wait, just choose an auspicious date to carry out his purchase.

Misplacement Of The 4 Celestial Animals???

One of the first theories we learnt in Feng Shui is the four Celestial Animals - Green Dragon, White Tiger, Red Phoenix and Black Turtle. In Chinese, it is common to hear people say "Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger, Front Red Phoenix and Back Black Turtle".

This theory is very powerful and it has proven to be effective over the last thousands of year as testified by many. Even in the Yin Fengshui, sometime we can see figurines or sculptures of Green Dragon and White Tiger on the left and right of tombstones.

During my course of field audits, I have made several observations which are relevant to this theory. Somehow I realised houses with the West side higher or more vibrant than the East side pose more problems that right side over-towering the left side. Left and right are relative to the facing of a property but East and West are directions that are fixed. I believe if we understand how the four celestial animals are named, we probably have a clue. Why Green Dragon and White Tiger, and not the other way round? Dragon resides in the East, and green is the colour that represents the Wood element in the East and therefore the term Green Dragon was coined. Similarly the Tiger holds its fort in the West represented by White colour for Metal element, and hence named as White Tiger.

Of course, some practitioners advocate the "Left Green Dragon, Right White Tiger" theory, while others insist that "East Green Dragon, West White Tiger". So who is right? I think trust the one that works!!!
